To understand Ldamie and his impact on African Art in general, and the art of Liberia, in particular, it is important to discover when his works were first collected.
This gallery includes works collected as early as 1922. All of the work in this gallery was collected before 1930, except one that could have been collected as late as 1932.
In other words, Ldamie had established the broad outlines of his work in the 1920s, during which period he sold several objects to the Brooklyn Museum Expedition, and many more to private collectors.
It can hardly be maintained, therefore, that Ldamie produced his early work solely "for an occasional chief or wealthy man," until "Ldamie's big break . . . when a government official visited Gaple with a broken typewriter . . . [after which time, Ldamie] began casting brass figures for officials to take home with them to the national capitol, Monrovia," as maintained by Barbara Johnson in Four Dan Sculptors (1986) p. 53. To make her narrative work, Johnson totally ignored the essential role of private collectors from America, in promoting and preserving his work.
Nor can Ldamie's work accurately be described as "tourist art," since the first sales were also well before tourism - and the accompanying tourist markets - had been established in Liberia. The concept of tourist art itself is based on nostalgia, the mythology of the "noble ancestor" and a desire to promote African cultural stasis. It is a concept designed to disparage and trivialize the art of early and mid-century modernist African artists.
Like Jackson Pollock in his relationship with Peggy Guggenheim, Ldamie produced his work not for tourists, but for his patrons, all of whom were long-term residents of Liberia, with the exception of objects collected by the Brooklyn Museum Expedition, and later, by the Austrian anthropologist, Etta Becker-Donner. |
