________,

I went out to the mail ship today because I was shipping Five Hundred Pounds in silver down the coast to Cavalla River. I was not thinking about you not knowing the English monetary system. It was just like shipping twenty-five hundred dollars in quarters.

Tonight we are having a fancy dress ball at the club but I have not the faintest idea how I should dress. Probably I will not dress other than in my linens as usual.

Last evening I was out late, twelve o'clock and today I can only sit around and feel stupid. I played bridge and won because I held the cards all night long. It was the first time I have played for months. I will have to keep on if I am that lucky.
