_____:

Chuck and Virginia were married today! It was a simple affair but so impressive. The Consul, Mr. MacVeagh, gave the bride away and Bishop Campbell married them. Bishop Campbell was in full ecclesiastic dress, the gold and white robes and miter and the other things of an Episcopalian Bishop. The altar was simple. Chuck wore white linens and sport shoes and Virginia wore the dress which she came ashore in because they couldn't get her trunks through customs in time. She had two wedding dresses in her trunks, that's the funny part, morning and afternoon; but dresses made no difference, even though hers was "sport".

Virginia brought in a gramaphone for me and I have had the steward play it, so between the wedding and the gramaphone I feel just a little maudlin.

After the wedding champagne and hors d'oeuvres were served at the Legation but we hurried off to Mr. Corwins for the reception.

Everyone was in from the Du and the various Consuls were invited. It was the best and livliest party I have attended, with an abundance of champagne, cakes, sandwiches and candies, plus icecream.

Chuck and Virginia got away before anything was pulled on them. I hope they hid out in one of the division houses tonight rather than to go up to their home on the Du center-site because everyone takes an interest...
