The voyage to Liberia started from New York City in January, 1934. Ocean transit was the only practical means of transportation in the mid-1930s, despite the length of the voyage. That gave everyone on board plenty of time for reading, card games, and even jump rope.

As the steamship neared the North African coast, other ships came into sight, as well as schools of porpoises.
