I completed Spirit of the Woodland
Garden the day before Christmas, 1989. I had saved a triangular
shaped piece of wood which looked like a funny head, and it had
been the visual cue for the silk painting: Carrot-Top Meets
the Annelid. (For image, see Tuckman, Diane and Janas, Jan.
The Complete Book of Silk Painting. Cincinnati, Ohio:
Northlight Books (1992 p.104).
I adapted the decorative freatures of
the painting for the sculptural head, including the orange headdress
with annelid motif, with fronds growing from the top. It captured
the idea of a carrot pulled from the garden. The eyes were two
knots from another branch.
Deer invade the gardens of Ohio, but
this deer-like spirit is a protector of the garden. It is always
vigilent.
