Ldamie didn't restrict his work to a single theme or characterization. His brass castings include mother's and babies and mothers and daughters. There are women preparing food for their family, and men as hunters and warriors. He depicted blacksmiths and porters, horsemen and women holding knives and machetes. Some figures are as simple as a men and women standing about or steadied by a staff or a cane. One, collected by Austrian ethnologist, Etta Becker-Donner, and included in her book, Kunst und Handwerk in NO Liberia, shows a man urinating.
Ldamie showed men and women in celebration holding ceremonial objects. And horn players, drummers, stilt walkers, wrestlers and acrobats. There are also animals, like the dog on the chair with a nursing mother, and elephants and crocodiles.
And slave drivers and slaves? What other African artists of the early twentieth century depicted the slave trade?
These aren't spirit figures or religious icons. They aren't mystical or mythical representations. They represent ordinary people, not shamans or heroes or chiefs.
In making his art, Ldamie captured nearly every aspect of village life.
Just like the work of his contemporaries in Europe and America; Ldamie's work is unmistakably modern in picturing the lives of ordinary people engaged in ordinary situations and activities.
