Monrovia, Liberia

________:
Sunday morning, Chuck, Virginia and I went down the river in a launch. The scenery was marvelous, just like African travel pictures: native thatch huts swinging into full view as we rounded bends in the river; primitive peoples whom you have to see to appreciate; brilliant plumed birds and giant trees.
We got a seven-foot crocodile, a few ducks, an eagle and a horn-billed bird in an hour and a quarter. Gunmen after all!
We had dinner at Mr. Hine's, the plantation manager. Last night when I got home I played chess as usual.
