This week-end has been another strenuous one. Last evening we went out to the British steamer, which was in port, and had dinner. We had a good excuse because we were sending some money down the coast. This morning we went out again to a Dutch vessel and had breakfast and dinner. Our excuse was the same but the money was going to a different place.
You know there is a great difference in the foods and the way they are prepared in the different countries; if the food on the countries ships are any criterion, I prefer the Dutch and German.
On Sunday there is always a band concert across the street, do this afternoon we had it. I will never get over the way they syncopate the music.
There are two churches close so we get their hymns. By the way, church is an all-day thing here. If time spent in church on Sunday meant anything these people would be Saints.
The crowning feature is the jail in back of us. The prisoners sing in their native dialects with one leading, the rest chanting!
Tuesday is the mail boat day home, and the next week-end is the first English mail boat in since I have been here. The mail yesterday was a pick-up by a freighter from Freetown.
