Boss Tweed, as drawn by Thomas Nast |
Cartoons have played a unique
role in American history.
In 1888, Joseph Pulitzer published
Walt McDougall's cartoon: "The Royal Feast of Belshazzar"
in his newspaper, the New York World.
It was during the hotly contested
election campaign of Republican William G. Blaine against Democrat
Grover Cleveland.
Some claim that McDougall's
single cartoon cost Blaine the election, where a mere 1,100 votes
in the state of New York was enough to propel Cleveland into
the Presidency.
